The Spruce Goose Organizers Want to Help You Clean Out and Organize Your Garage

What is Our Process?

Let’s face it: the garage often becomes the house’s ultimate “I’ll deal with it later” space. Bikes, holiday decorations, old furniture, and those boxes you haven’t opened since 2007—all crammed together like a Tetris game gone wrong. If your garage is bursting at the seams, it’s time to take action (before it gets too hot!). Wondering how we can help?

Here’s our process.

Step 1: Meet, Define Your Goals, and Set a Date

Before diving in, we usually like to meet and discuss your goals. Our complimentary Needs Assessment gives us the opportunity to understand what you envision for your garage. Do you want to go through everything (or just some of it) to decide what stays or goes? What’s your plan for the items you part with—donations, sales, or packing up for friends and family, perhaps? For storage, are we going to use containers that you already have, or will we need to purchase them? Do you want to use labels (hint: we recommend them), and where? Do your goals include parking one or two cars in the garage, creating a workspace or gym space, or neatly arranging tools? What other goals do you have? How much of your time will you be spending with us on the work date? By answering these and many other questions, we’ll craft a clear plan before starting.

Step 2: Gather Supplies

Depending on your goals, you might need storage solutions like shelving or bins. We can guide you in choosing the right options, though we don’t typically handle installations. If decluttering is on the menu, consider waiting until we’ve sorted everything and we’ve gotten the piles down to what you really want to keep, to see what storage solutions you’ll actually need. Before we come, save any spare boxes for donations or packing up for others—and don’t forget trash bags for the inevitable discards. We will discuss other supplies that may be specific to your job, but we always have on hand markers, stick-on labels, tape, dust rags, and more.

Step 3: Sort by Category and Make Decisions

The magic of organizing begins with categories. Common groupings include Holiday Décor, Yard Supplies, and Auto Supplies. You might also have Fishing Gear, Toys, Pet Supplies, Keepsakes (like childhood collectibles), or Cleaning Supplies.

We’ll create piles for each category, making it easier for you to focus on one group at a time and decide what stays or goes (if that is the goal). We’ll help you through that decision process. Categories also help us design functional zones in your garage, arranged for easy access.

Of course, within each category, if we’re decluttering, we work with you to further divide items:

Keep: Items you use regularly or truly need—these stay in their categories.

Donate/Sell: Items in good condition that no longer serve you. We can take donations for you on our way home, free of charge, as long as they fit in our vehicles. We do not sell items, but you may have your own plans for selling.

Recycle: Boxes, paper, etc. depending on the rules of your recycle service.

Trash: Broken, unusable items that need to go.

We will gently remind you to consider that if you haven’t used something in years or forgot you owned it, it might be time to say goodbye. However, there is no pressure from us…only you know what is important to save.

Step 4: Clean the Space

With your garage mostly emptied and sorted, we will sweep out debris, clear cobwebs, and wipe down surfaces. A clean foundation sets the stage for a fresh start.

Step 5: Plan Your Layout; Organize and Store

We’ll consider your “Keep” piles, your original goals, and the space and storage solutions, to determine the best placement for everything. We’ll position frequently used items in accessible spots while storing seasonal or seldom-used items higher up. Whether using your existing bins or recommending new ones, we’ll ensure everything fits neatly and logically. Finally, labels will probably be used so that everyone knows where to find their items.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning out your garage might seem daunting, but the results are transformative. You’ll reclaim valuable space and experience a daily sense of accomplishment each time you step into your organized garage. Let us help you turn your cluttered chaos into a streamlined success story! You’ll be glad you did.
